Dear Spacemodellers,
Very sad news came in from Baikonur - Russian Spacemodelling pioneer Alexandr Zagorodni passed away aged 66.
Alexandr Ivanovich Zagorodni was born on March 21st 1957 in Kaliningrad. For the majority of his life – 1964 to 2008 he lived in the „Star city“ of Baikonur. Since age 11 he went on with aeromodelling and spacemodelling – a passion which followed him his whole life. After finishing the Moscow Aviation Institute, Alexandr returned to Baikonur, where he held several leading positions, his longest being at the International Space School V. N. Chelomey.
In 2008 Alexandr moved to Pavlovski Posad near Moscow, where he led the spacemodelling section until 2021.
As a sportsman, Alexandr has won numerous World Cups, and several FAI medals for the overall World Cup – the last being the bronze medal in S7. For his many high sporting achievements, he got the title Master of Sports in Spacemodelling.
Alexandr showed even bigger organizational qualities, as he was one of the leading persons to manage the 2006 World Spacemodelling Championships and 2007 Asian Championships – considered by many one of the best there ever was organized.
Alexandr was a calm, friendly person, open to talks and willing to help others. As a person he was well respected by all who knew him.
Alexandr Zagorodni will be missed, but will never be forgotten due to his contributions to our sport.
May Alexandr Zagorodni rest in peace in the blue Skies and Space above us.
